Charles William Linsell was born in Harlow, Essex, on 15th June 1897, son of Alfred John Linsell a, Carman and Rebecca Linsell (nee Puncher). The youngest of four children.
He was Baptised at St. John the Baptist, Harlow, Essex, on 22nd August 1897.
1901 Census records Charles aged 3, living with his parents, sisters May (10), Dorothy (7) and brother Alfred (6) at, 38 Pitchford Street, West Ham, London. His mother Rebecca died later that year aged 34.
1911 Census, Charles (13), brother Alfred (16) and their father Alfred Snr. a widower, are recorded as boarders, living at 7 Ham Park Road, West Ham, London.
His father Alfred John Linsell died in the early part of 1915 aged 50.
Wartime Service
Charles enlisted at London, on 4th September 1914, posted to the 1st Royal Marine Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Royal Marine Light Infantry, joining at Chatham, Kent and issued with the service number CH/18944.
We believe he served for a short time in France on completion of his training. He arrived at Cape Helles, Gallipoli on 30th May 1915, leaving in January 1916, arriving on the Western Front in May 1916.
He was Killed in Action on 13th November 1916, the first day of the Battle of Ancre (Battle of Ancre 13th – 15th November 1916). He has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, to the missing.
Additional Information
We believe his connection to Cheshunt, is through his sister Dorothy Rosabela Linsell, who lived in Cheshunt, Herts.
The Royal Naval Division Casualties of the Great War record he was born in Cheshunt, Herts, on 15th June 1897, and his next of kin, was his sister Dorothy Rosabela Linsell, of College Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
All other documents give his place of birth as Harlow, Essex.
