Pre War

Walter John Larkin was born in 1873, in Aldenham, Herts, son of William and Emma (nee Walker) Larkin.


Baptised on 14th September 1873, in the Parish Church, Aldenham, Herts. The family were living in Letchmore Heath at the time.


1891 Census records Walter aged 8, at school, living with his parents and five siblings in, Aldenham.


By 1891 the family are living in Letchmore Heath, Walter is working as a Groom and Domestic Servant, still living at home with his parents and four siblings.


1901 Census has Walter working as Coachman, boarding with widow Mrs. Elizabeth Felmingham and her son William at, 3, Caple Road, New Bushey.

Wartime Service

William enlisted at London in April 1918, aged 44, he was called-up on 19th June 1918, and posted to the Royal Army Service Corps, Heavy Transport Section, with the service number T/422660.


He was working at Woolwich Dockyard on 6th February 1919, when the vehicle he was in, was involved in an accident, he was taken to The Royal Herbert Military Hospital, Shooters Hill, Woolwich, with fractured ribs, he died of his injuries the following afternoon, 7th February 1919. He was buried in his home town of Aldenham, in St. John the Baptist Churchyard.

Additional Information

His Pay Owing was split between three of his sister Ruth £4-5s-6d & 14/11, Mary 14/10, and Jane 14/10, his two sister who lived in the USA received nothing. He was awarded a War Gratuity of £5, but no recipient was indicated in the record of effects. Further monies from probate on 1 Oct 1919. Resulted in Ruth receiving a further £105 16s
