Pre War

Harnell Jackson was born on 15 Jun 1891 in London to Edwin Abner Jackson and Sarah (nee Young).


On the 1901 Census he was living, together with his father, at a Great Uncle’s house in Lambeth. On the 1911 Census Harnell is registered at Duchess of Albany Home for Sailors (later known as Aggie Weston's) in Portsmouth.


He had enlisted in the Royal Navy as boy entrant on 8 Oct 1908 serving as an Officers steward. He left the Navy on 30 Aug 1912.

Wartime Service

Harnell enlisted as Rifleman 1929 in 21st London Regt (1st Surrey Rifles). His number suggests he joined in Aug/Sep 1914. He died in Harpenden 10 Mar 1915 and is buried in St Nicholas Churchyard.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £2 7s 9d paid to his father. Brother Cyril Edwin enlisted in Dec 1915 Royal Army Service corps as a Private (motor mechanic/ driver). and demobilised in 1919.
