Reginald Frederick was born in Harpenden on 9 Jan 1894 to George Pearce, a groom, and Sarah (nee Hawkins ).


On the 1901 Census they were living on Wheathampstead Road, Harpenden. On the 1911 Census the family were living in Lincoln Cottage, Lower Cravells Road, Harpenden.  Frederick was working as a gardener in a nursery. Reginald had 4 brothers and 3 sisters.

Wartime Service

Frederick (as he was known in the Military) enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 17860. He was killed on 12 Oct 1916 when his battalion took part in a partially successful attack that afternoon during the Battle of Le Transloy on the Somme.

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs S Pearce, 52 Cravells Road, Harpenden, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "Peace, Perfect Peace". War Gratuity of £8 10s and arrears of £5 12s 2d was paid to his father.
