Pre War

Jesse Kempster was born in 1895 in Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of Jesse and Susannah Kempster and one of seven children, although one had died by 1911. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Kings Hill Cottages, Berkhamsted where his father was working as a horseman on a farm. They remained there in 1911 at which time Jesse was working as a farm labourer. 


His father died in late 1917 in Berkhamsted. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hertford and joined the Hertfordshire Yeomanry with reg, no. 2486 (re-numbered in 1917 to reg. no. 105757).


Jesse died of malaria on 22 October 1918, aged 23 in Damascus, Syria and is buried in Damascus Commonwealth War Cemetery, Syria.

Additional Information

A war gratuity of £15 10s and pay owing of £23 1s 7d was divided between his mother, brothers Harry, Ernest and Albert and sisters Kate and Nellie. 


His mother received a pension of 5s 6d a week.
