Pre War
Edward Hall Burgess was born on 10 January 1890 in East Dereham, Norfolk, the son of George and Jane Burgess (nee Hall) and one of twelve children. He was baptised there later the same month.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at Shipham Road, East Dereham, where his father was working as a blacksmith. They remained in East Dereham in 1901, living in the Toftwood area his parents remained there in 1911, but Edward had then moved to Burloes, Royston, Barkway, Herts where he was one of three boarders living with George Stripp at The Bothy, Burloes [Hall], Royston, Herts and working as a gardener (domestic).
As Edward enlisted at Watford and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, it is likely that he was living/working in the Langleybury area prior to enlistment.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Watford and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, serving with the 2nd Battalion in France from 1 May 1915.
Although the medal index card states that Edward died of wounds, other records state that he was killed in action on 16 June 1915, when the battalion were in action at Givenchy. The latter is more likely as he has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Additional Information
His parents jointly received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £5 6s 2d. Pension records exist with his mother as dependant but give no indication of the amount of pension received.
