Bert Rance was born in 1892 in Potten End, nr. Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of Emma & Daniel Rance.  His father died in 1900, aged 42,  and on the 1901 Census Bert was living with this widowed mother and 3 siblings at Potten End. They remained living in Potten End in 1911 when his mother gave her occupation as a Charwoman and Bert was working as a Farm Labourer. 


His mother died in 1912, aged 54. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Berkhamsted and initially served with the Bedfordshire Regiment (Reg. No. 26178), and was later transferred to the 6th Battalion,  Northants Regiment.


He was killed in action at the Somme on 17 February 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His older sister Gertrude Sarsons received a war gratuity of £3 10s and pay owing of £6 18s 5d.
