Pre War

The James Dunn named on the Little Gaddesden War Memorial cannot be conclusively identified.  No one with this name appears in Little Gaddesden Census Returns or Parish Records and none of the possible CWGC records name relatives in the area.

Wartime Service

Most likely possibilities are:

1. Private James Dunn, reg. no. 98150, 238th Company, Machine Gun Corps who died 20 September 1917 and is named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

2. Private James Dunn, reg, no. 57662, 196th Company, Machine Gun Corps who died of wounds on 13 February 1917 and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.

3. Private James W Dunn, reg. no. 12476, 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, killed in action 10 July 1916 and is named on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. (N.B. Although born in Ireland he must have been resident and working in Herts or Beds to enlist with Beds Regt at Hertford.  He may have initially served in the machine guns section of Beds Regt  and transferred to the Machine Gun Corps) - this man seems least likely to be correct.

Additional Information

*1 A James Dunn in the Machine Gun Corps appears on the Little Gaddesden memorials and then a James Bunn in the Machine Gun Corps is listed in the St Albans Cathedral Diocese records. Although not yet proven it would seem likely that they are one and the same person. Looking at both CWGC and SDITGW records for both names it seems most likely that ‘Dunn’ is the correct spelling, as two possibilities have been found that fit the information that we know: Private 57662 (formerly 20446) James Dunn and Private James Dunn 98150 (formerly 34972) both in the Machine Gun Corps, but no connection to Little Gaddesden or indeed Hertfordshire has yet been found for either.
