Born about 1890 to Father William Lewis and Mother Elizabeth Francis. In the 1901 census the family is living at 26 Dickinson Square Croxley Green. His father's occupation is listed as labourer. William has two older sisters Florence and Edith, three younger brothers Ernest, Thomas and Percy and one younger sister Elizabeth Annie. All the children were born in Rickmansworth apart from the youngest 2 who were born in Croxley.

In the 1911 census William now aged 21 is shown living with his parents at 219 Chester Road Watford. His occupation is a motor driver.

Recorded as enlisting in Woolwich on the 7th January 1915.
