Biography

Little is known about Frederick Claxton’s early life. He was born at York in the winter of 1880. In the 1901 Census he was shown employed as a Servant/Gardener by the School Master of Raskelf St Mary’s, a parish close to Easingwold in Yorkshire, and he was living at the School House.

In 1911 he married Ethel Annie Gentle at Watford. At this time he was working as an Attendant at the Asylum, and living in Abbots Langley.

The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour recorded Frederick for the first time in its Roll of Honour in August 1916, serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA). Frederick’s Medal Roll entries confirmed that he served as a Gunner with the 217th Siege Battery of the RGA.

In the April 1918 Abbots Langley Parish Magazine it was recorded that he had been discharged disabled, however Frederick returned to work at the Asylum and as late as 1933 was still employed there as a Male Nurse.

Frederick Claxton survived the War. His brother in law, Lewis Gentle, his wife Ethel’s brother, was killed in action in May 1917.
