Biography

Robert Dunn was born at Garston on 8th September 1894. He was the only son of George and Alice Dunn, who at the time were living at Horseshoe Lane Cottages in Leavesden. The couple also had two daughters, Kate and Alice. George worked as a Coachman-Groom. By the time of the 1901 Census the family had moved to 27 Adrian Road, Abbots Langley, where George was listed as a Cab Proprietor. Ten years later, in 1911 Robert was living next door at 25 Adrian Road and was working as a Dealer and Agent for a Knacker.

The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first listed Robert in June 1915 serving with the Hertfordshire Territorials. He continued to serve with the 1st Hertfordshire’s throughout the War as a Lewis Gunner, however at some point, after being gassed he returned to England and served with the Labour Corps.

Robert was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919. Robert Dunn survived the War, however his brother in law, Harry Cleal, who had married his sister, Alice, was killed in action on 10th December 1917.
