Biography

Charley Ford was listed in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour from December 1916 through to the end of the War. He was born at Rickmansworth in the winter of 1888, one of five children (four daughters and one son) born to George and Ellen Ford of 11 Talbot Road. By the time of the 1901 Census his father had died and Ellen was noted as the Head of the Household, and was working as a Laundress (Wash), and Charley was working as a Baker’s Shop Boy. In 1911 Charley and his Mother lived at 13 Talbot Road in Rickmansworth. Ellen worked as a Charlady and Charley was employed as a Post Man.

It is not known when Charley moved to the Abbots Langley area, but he was recorded for the first time in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in December 1916, when he was noted serving with the 16th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment. At some point in 1917 he transferred to the Highland Light Infantry, and served with this unit until the end of the War.

Charley was listed in the Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 Absent Voter Records where he was recorded as a Gunner, serving with the Kings Royal Rifle Corps, and his address was given at Railway Terrace, Abbots Langley.

Charley Ford survived the War.
