Biography

Harry Gentle was born on 22nd October 1897 at Bedmond. He was one of six children (three sons and three daughters) born to Walter and Elizabeth Gentle. Walter worked as a Carpenter on an Estate.

The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour listed Harry for the first time in July 1916, serving with the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), and recorded his service through to the end of the War. From April 1918 when the RNAS was incorporated into the newly formed Royal Air Force (RAF), Harry was recorded with the RAF. He was also listed in the Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 Absent Voter Lists, and was shown serving with the RAF and his home address was given at Bedmond.

Harry Roland survived the War, however his cousins, Arthur and Lewis did not. Arthur was killed in action on 31st August 1916, whilst Lewis died of wounds near Arras on 11th May 1917.
