Biography

Alfred Gibson was listed in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour for the first time in November 1914, serving with the Hertfordshire Yeomanry. Although he was recorded in the Roll of Honour on a regular basis for the remainder of the War, it has been difficult to establish a connection with Abbots Langley.

In the 1911 Census fifty-three year old Alice Gibson, a widowed Dressmaker from Hemel Hempstead, was listed living at 53 The High Street, Abbots Langley. However it has not been possible to establish a family relationship.

An Alfred Murrell Gibson was listed in the 1911 Census living with his wife and daughter at 38 Gombards, Worley Road, St Albans, and working as a Commercial Traveller. However an association with Abbots Langley has not been discovered for this person.

In the December 1915 Parish Magazine Alfred was noted suffering from dysentery and typhoid. It is not known who was relaying information about Alfred for inclusion in the parish Magazine. His illness was also reported in the Hertfordshire Advertiser on 11th December 1915, where he was recorded as Albert Gibson, from Abbots Langley.

The Hertfordshire Yeomanry was a Territorial unit committed to Home Service at the outbreak of the Great War. However almost to a man the Yeomanry signed up for Imperial Service overseas, and was despatched to Egypt in September 1914.It is assumed that Alfred went with them.

It is presumed that Alfred survived the War.
