Biography

William Halse was born on 1st July 1898 at Abbots Langley and was baptised at Langleybury on 22nd August 1898. He was one of five children (two sons and three daughters) born to William (senior) and Annie Halse. Throughout the latter years of the nineteenth century the family had lived at Gallows Hill, Abbots Langley, and Upper Highway, however in the 1901 Census they lived at Abbots Road. William (senior) was employed as a Builder.

In the February 1917 Langleybury Parish Magazine William was listed serving with the Hertfordshire Yeomanry, and in May 1917 he was once again mentioned in the publication.

William’s Medal Roll recorded that he had served as a Private/Driver with the Royal Field Artillery (RFA). It is not known when he transferred to the RFA. However, he was also recorded in the Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 Absent Voter Records for Langleybury serving with the rank of Private with the RFA, and his address was given at Hamilton Road.

William was included in the Langleybury Roll of Honour at the end of the War. Despite living for a short time at Abbots Langley, William was not included in any of that Parish’s records.

William Halse survived the War.
