Biography

Albert Hawkins was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919. He was initially identified from the Absent Voter Records and was not recorded elsewhere in the Abbots Langley Parish records. In the Absent Voter Records Albert was listed serving as a Private with the 70th Field Bakery, Army Service Corps. In civilian life Albert was a Master Baker, as was his father before him. In the Absent Voter Records Albert’s address was listed at Primrose Hill, Abbots Langley.

Albert enlisted on 24th June 1916, and undertook a Medical at Hertford on the next day, where he was described of “good physical development”. He gave his address as The Bridge Bakery, Kings Langley (although census records showed the Bakery was in Abbots Langley), and his occupation was Master Baker.

He was posted to the Army Reserve, and was eventually called up for Service at Watford on 11th December 1916. On 12th December he joined up with the Army Service Corps, and by the next day had proved his competence at the Company Field Bakery at Aldershot. On 27th December 1917 Albert was admitted to hospital suffering from Pleurisy, and was discharged on 21st January 1918.

Albert remained in England until 7th November 1918 when he embarked for France at Southampton. He arrived at Cherbourg the next day and travelled by train to Taranto, in southern Italy. On 21st November Albert embarked at Taranto and arrived at Salonika on 28th November 1918. He remained in Salonika until 2nd March 1919, and arrived back in England on 16th March 1919. Albert was eventually demobilised on 14th April 1919, and returned to the Bridge Bakery at Abbots Langley.

Albert Hawkins was born in December 1892 at Hornchurch, Essex. He was one of four children born to William and Mary Hawkins. In the 1901 Census the family lived at Langley Bridge, Abbots Langley, where William worked as a Baker/Bread-maker.

Albert married Mary Tibbott on 1st June 1914 at Abbots Langley, and his Service Record noted that a daughter was born on 19th February 1918 at Abbots Langley.

Albert Hawkins survived the War.
