Biography

Rupert Gomme was born on 30th September 1887 at Bledlow near Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire. He was one of seven children born to George and Caroline Gomme. George was a Farmer at Grove Way Farm, Bledlow. In 1911 Rupert was employed as a Paper Cutter, and was living at the family home in Bledlow.

Rupert was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in November 1917serving with a Remount Depot. The Army Service Corps (ASC) remount Depots were responsible for the provisioning of horses and mules for other units in the Army. There were four Remount Depots at Woolwich, Dublin, Melton Mowbray and Arborfield.

It is likely that Rupert spent a very short time with the ASC, as by January 1918 the Abbots Langley Roll of Honour indicated that he had transferred to the Royal Engineers (RE), and by the end of the War was serving with the 104th Building Company of the RE.

The Absent Voter Records of Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 listed Rupert serving as a Sapper with the Royal Engineers, and his address was given at 20 Adrian Road, Abbots Langley.

Rupert Gomme survived the War.
