Biography

Hebert Hedges was born in the summer of 1885 at Abbots Langley. He was one of eight children born to George and Mary Hedges. His brother, Frank also served in the Great War. George had various jobs. In the 1881 Census he worked as a General Dealer, and ten years later worked as a Cow-keeper and Dairyman, and in the 1901 Census he was listed as a Car-man. The family also moved several times. In the 1881 and 1891 Census the family lived in Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley, but by 1901 they had moved to Judge Street at Callowland, before re-locating back to Tanners Hill, Abbots Langley by the time of the 1911 Census. By 1911 Herbert had married and was living with his wife Mary, and one year old daughter Doris at 55 Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley. Herbert worked as a Carter/Labourer in 1901, whilst living at Callowland, but by the time of the 1911 Census he was recorded working as a Bricklayer.

Herbert was first listed in the Leavesden Parish Records in August 1916, where it was indicated that he had “joined HM Forces”. At the time he was employed as a Labourer at the Leavesden Asylum, and was living at Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley.

Herbert was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in November 1917, however his unit was not listed, and this situation was repeated through to the end of the War.

He was listed in the Absent Voter Lists for both Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 where he was recorded serving with the 396th Agricultural Company, Labour Corps, and living at Asylum Road, Abbots Langley.

Herbert Hedges survived the War, as did his brother Frank, and his nephew Percy.
