Biography

William Charles Horne was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in December 1915, serving with the 12th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment. For the initial listing he was shown, incorrectly, as Francis George Horne. His name was corrected to William Charles for the January 1916 entry, and remained as William Charles for the remainder of the War.

He had attested on 11st October 1915, and indicated that he was living at Church Hill, Bedmond. He joined up with the 12th Suffolk’s at Bury St Edmunds on 15th October 1915, and was sent to France on 5th June 1916. On 9th November 1916 he was sent back to England, having been wounded some time earlier.

In the December 1916 edition of the Parish Magazine it was noted that William was wounded whilst serving with the 12th Suffolk’s. He was again reported wounded in the May 1917 Parish Magazine- however this referred to the original wounding. William’s Pension Record notes that he was discharged being no longer physically fit for War Service on 15th May 1917, and in July 1917 the Parish Magazine noted that William had been discharged disabled. He was not recorded in the Parish Roll of Honour after December 1917. However the reason for this has been identified. From January 1918 William Charles Horne was recorded as William Charles Howe.

Other records for William have not been forthcoming however more detail about his early life has been identified from his Pension Record. When he attested on 11th October 1915 he was 23 years 6 months old, which showed that he was born in April 1892.

William Charles Horne survived the War.
