Biography

Arthur Herbert Hutchins was known as Herbert Hutchins, and was identified through the analysis of the Leavesden Parish records. He was not recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish records throughout the War, however he gave Bedmond as his place of residence when he was demobilised in 1920.

Herbert was born between 1890 and 1892. The precise date is unknown as the various records that have been identified have differing dates of birth. At the time of the 1901 Census Herbert was living with his grandfather and grandmother at Bedmond. His grandfather was 69 years old and worked as an Agricultural Labourer.

Herbert married (Florence Emma) on 1st August 1914, and the couple had two children. John Percy Hutchins was born on 7th November 1915, and Herbert Arthur Hutchins was born on 1st July 1917, whilst Herbert was in Egypt.

Herbert was called for service on 2nd January 1917, and his Service Record showed that he was posted to the 1/5th Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment on 27th April 1917, when on the same day he embarked at Southampton en route to Egypt. The battalion arrived at Alexandria on 23rd May 1917.

Herbert was admitted to hospital on 23rd October 1918 (reason unknown) and discharged to duty on 19th November. By 24th September 1919 he had been attached to the 2/19th Middlesex Battalion of the London Regiment.

On 28th September 1919 Herbert embarked at Port Said aboard the “Himalaya”, bound for England and when he arrived he was granted four weeks leave. Between 17th November 1919 and 6th January 1920 Herbert was admitted to hospital suffering with a septic finger, however was demobilised to an address at Bedmond on 3rd February 1920.

Herbert Hutchins survived the War.
