Biography
Albert Kilmaster was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in October 1914. He was listed serving with “Kitchener’s Army”. In the December 1914 the Magazine confirmed that Albert was serving with the 4th Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment. A year later in December 1915 the Parish Magazine noted that Albert had been wounded, and at this point was serving with the 2nd Bedfordshire’s. The Hertfordshire Advertiser also reported that Albert had been wounded in its 11th December 1915 edition.
Albert was not recorded in the Abbots Langley Roll of Honour throughout 1917, which may signify that he was recuperating, and not attached to a military unit. However Albert was once again recorded in the January 1918 Parish Magazine, and was still serving with the 2nd Bedfordshire’s.
Albert’s Medal Roll indicated that he served with the 2nd Bedfordshire’s and the Military (Foot) Police, but it is not certain if the Foot Police were associated with the Bedfordshire Battalion.
The identification of Albert’s Medal Roll information has subsequently led to the discovery of a private family record, which noted that he was born on 31st August 1897 at Wokingham. It has not been possible to identify how Albert was linked to Abbots Langley, beyond being listed in the Parish Roll of Honour, or how he got to be recorded.
Albert Kilmaster survived the War.
