Biography

Alfred Kimpton was born in the summer of 1891 in London. He was one of ten children (four sons and six daughters) born to William and Mary Kimpton. In the 1901 Census William was employed as a General Porter at Leavesden Asylum, and the family lived at Rose Cottage, Asylum Road, Troley Bottom, Abbots Langley. By the time of the 1911 Census the family still lived at the same address, and whilst William worked as a General Labourer at the Asylum, Alfred was employed as a Mill Operative (Reeler) at a local Paper Mill.

Alfred was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in October 1914, serving with Kitchener’s Army. By December 1914 he had been posted to the 4th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment. His younger brother, William (junior), was also first recorded with the 4th East Surrey’s in January 1915.

In the December 1915 Roll of Honour Alfred had transferred to the 11th East Surreys, but was not recorded in the Magazine from January 1917 through to January 1918, which might signify that he had been wounded and returned to England for hospital treatment. However some time towards the end of 1917 Alfred transferred to the North Staffordshire Regiment, and was recorded with this Unit in the Parish Roll of Honour of January 1918, and remained with them until the end of the War.

Alfred was recorded in the Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 Absent Voter Records serving with the 1st Garrison Battery of the North Staffordshire Regiment, and his address was given at 79 Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley.

Alfred Kimpton survived the War, as did his cousin Joseph. His younger brother William also survived but was taken Prisoner of War in June 1918, and imprisoned in Germany.
