Biography

George Lay was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in August 1915, serving with the 18th Battalion of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps (KRRC). The Roll of Honour recorded George remaining with this unit through to December 1918.

George was recorded in the Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 Absent Voter Records, serving with the 868th (Home Service) Labour Company, Labour Corps, and living at 5 Temple Villas, Abbots Langley. It is not known when George transferred from a fighting unit to a Labour Company serving in England.

George Lay was born in the winter of 1876 at St Pancras in London. He had married sometime about 1901, and in 1911 the Census recorded that he was living with his wife Helen, four daughters and one son, at 5 Temple Villas, Abbots Langley. George was working as a Railway Clerk. The Parish Magazine recorded that the couple had a second son on 3rd March 1918.
