Biography

John Middleton was born in the winter of 1878 at South Darenth, Kent. He was one of four children (three sons and a daughter) born to James and Frances Middleton. James worked as a Stoker in a Paper Mill, and the family continued to live in the same area through to the time of the 1911 Census. However John was not recorded in the 1901 Census, and had moved away from the family home. It is not certain where he was living, however he was recorded once again in the 1911 Census.

John had married in 1910, and in 1911 was recorded living with his wife at 34 Adrian Road, Abbots Langley. John was employed by the Metropolitan Asylum Board as an Attendant on the Insane at the Leavesden Asylum. Grace Rawson, also an Attendant at the Asylum lived with John and his wife as a Boarder.

The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first recorded John in August 1916, serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA). He was recorded each month through to the end of the War serving with the RGA, and probably moved from battery to battery during this period, but this detail has not been recorded.

John was listed in the Absent Voter Records in Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919. He was listed living at 19 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley, and serving with 193rd Siege Battery of the RGA.

John Middleton survived the War.
