Biography

Frederick Orchard was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in Autumn 1919. He was initially identified from the Absent Voter Records and was not recorded elsewhere in the Abbots Langley Parish records. In the Absent Voter Records Frederick was listed serving with the 3rd Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment and his address was given at Leverstock Green.

In the 1911 Census Frederick was listed living at Royston Road, Camp Road, St Albans, and worked as a Butcher at a County Council Asylum – probably Hill End. Frederick married Katherine Jordan at St Albans in the winter of 1913. A son, Frederick Charles, was born on 31st August 1916, and christened at Hemel Hempstead on 22nd September.

It is not known when Frederick (senior) enlisted, however his Medal Roll Card noted that he initially served with the 4th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment. It is also unknown how he became associated with Abbots Langley, but it may have been through his Asylum work, or how he was listed with Abbots Langley in the Absent Voter Records especially when his address was given at Leverstock Green.

Frederick Orchard survived the War.
