Biography

This man was known as John Muskett in the various records, however was christened Arthur John Muskett at Abbots Langley on 19th April 1899. He was born at Abbots Langley in the winter of 1899 one of five children born to John (senior) and Laura Muskett. John (junior’s) brother, William also served in the Great War.

In 1901 the family lived at Pimlico near Bedmond, where John (senior) was employed as a Garden Labourer at an Institution – presumably the Asylum at Leavesden. By the time of the 1911 Census the family had moved to 55 Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley. John (senior) continued to work as a Garden Labourer.

John (junior) was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in April 1917, serving with the Training Reserve. He continued with his training and was recorded serving with a Training Battalion in the January 1918 Roll of Honour. At some point in 1918 John transferred to the Royal Engineers, but in the Absent Voter Records of Autumn 1918, Spring 1919 and Autumn 1919, he was listed with the 105th Agricultural Company, and was based at Winchester. During this period his address was given at 83 Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley.

John Muskett survived the War, as did his uncle George Muskett. However his brother, William, who served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, having emigrated to Canada between 1911 and the start of the War, was killed in action at Vimy Ridge on 3rd March 1917.
