Biography

Isaac Noy was born on 5th March 1887 at Blythling, Suffolk. He was one of eleven children (six sons and five daughters) born to William and Martha Noy. In the 1891 Census the family was recorded living at Ferry Road, Sudbourne in Suffolk where William Noy worked as a Labourer. By 1901 the family had moved to Aldburgh Road, Sudbourne, and eight of the children had moved away. By this time William and Isaac worked as Shepherds on a Farm.

In 1907 Isaac married Gertrude Catlin at St Albans and the couple had a son and a daughter in 1908 and 1910 respectively. By the time of the 1911 Census the family lived at 49 New England Street, St Albans, where Isaac worked as a Gardener Domestic. It is not known when Isaac moved to Abbots Langley, however he was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in January 1915, serving with the Hertfordshire Territorials. On 28th August 1915 Isaac was pictured along with Rob Cork and John Mann in the Watford Illustrated, with a caption noting that they were all men from Abbots Road, Abbots Langley.

In 1916 Isaac joined the 1st Battalion of the Hertfordshire Regiment. The November 1917 Parish Magazine noted that Isaac had been reported sick or wounded whilst serving with the Hertfordshire’s. At some point, probably in 1918 he transferred to the Labour Corps and served with a Prisoner of War Company, where he supervised German prisoners undertaking labouring tasks for the British Army.

Isaac was listed in the Absent Voter Records of Autumn 1918 serving with the rank of Lance Corporal with the 5th Reserve Division of the Bedfordshire Regiment, and living at Abbots Road, Abbots Langley.

Isaac Noy survived the War.
