Biography

Joseph Newton was born in the winter of 1876 at Wendover. In the 1891 Census he was recorded living with his uncle, David Chandler at Wendover, and was working as a Farm Labourer. On 21st December 1895 he married Annie Wells at Leverstock Green, and at the time of the 1901 Census the family, which then included a son and daughter lived at Bennetts End in Hemel Hempstead where Joseph worked as a General Labourer. Another six children (three sons and three daughters) were born between 1902 and 1915. The eldest son Joseph (junior) also served in the Great War. By 1904 the family had moved back to Abbots Langley.

Joseph (senior) was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in November 1916, serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. He was recorded with the same unit throughout the War, but when recorded in the Absent Voter Lists in Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 had transferred to the 433rd Agricultural Company within the Labour Corps. It is not known when he was transferred, but by 1918 Joseph would have been 44 years old, and maybe less fit to be a front line soldier. In the Absent Voter Records Joseph was recorded as living at Tanners Wood, Abbots Langley.

Joseph Newton (senior) survived the War, as did his son Joseph Newton (junior).
