Biography

James Frederick Paine was known as Frederick Paine in the Abbots Langley Parish Records, but known as James Frederick in Census and Absent Voter Records. He was born in 1892 at Caterham, Surrey. He was one of three children (one son and two daughters) born to James (senior) and Elizabeth Paine. In the 1901 and 1911 Census the family was recorded living at Trowley Bottom, Abbots Langley, near to the Compasses Public House. James (senior) worked as an Upholsterer, and in 1911 James (junior) worked as a Farm Labourer.

James (junior) was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in July 1917 serving with the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment. He was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Autumn 1918, Spring 1919, and Autumn 1919 serving with the 4th (Reserve) Battalion of the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment. He was recorded with an address at Trowley Bottom, Abbots Langley.

James/Frederick Paine survived the War.
