Biography

Leonard Sage was born in the spring of 1887 at Leverstock Green. He was one of seven children (five sons and two daughters) born to George and Emma Sage. At the time of the 1901Census the family lived at the Woodside area of Leavesden. George worked as a Farm Labourer, and Leonard was employed as a Gardener.

In the autumn of 1908 Leonard married Emily French, and at the time was living at Toms Lane, Bedmond. By the time of the 1911 Census Leonard and Emily had had a son and daughter and lived at 13 Asylum Road, Abbots Langley. Leonard worked as a Waggoner on a Farm.

He was recorded for the first time in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in July 1916, serving with the 3rd Battalion of the Northampton Regiment. However, from January 1918 he was not recorded in the Parish Roll of Honour.

Leonard survived the War, but it is not known why he was not recorded in the Parish records after the end of December 1917. Leonard’s brother Albert died from his wounds following the Battle of Boom Ravine, on the Somme, on 17th February 1917. His brother Arthur was killed in action on the Western Front on 22nd March 1917.
