Biography

Samuel Simmons was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in Autumn 1918, Spring 1919 and Autumn 1919. He was initially identified from the Absent Voter Records and was not recorded elsewhere in the Abbots Langley Parish records. In the Absent Voter Records Samuel was listed serving with the Royal Field Artillery, and his address was given at 111 Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley.

Samuel was born in the winter of 1894 at Tring. He was one of six children born to William and Charlotte Simmons. At the time of the 1901 Census the family lived at Pendley Burches Cottage, Tring where William worked as a Gardener Labourer. By the time of the 1911 Census William had died. Charlotte and the family lived at 25 Pretoria Road, Hyde, Watford, and Samuel worked as a Carrier.

It is not known when Samuel enlisted however in the Absent Voter Records he was listed serving as a Driver with the 170th Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery (RFA). It is likely that he would have served with other units of the RFA at earlier times in the War.

Samuel survived the War.
