Biography

Herbert Syer was born in the spring of 1881 at Hackney. He was the younger of two sons born to William and Eliza Syer. At the time of the 1901 Census the family lived at Bedmond where William was listed as a Grocer and Shop-keeper, and Herbert was employed as a Clerk.

Although the family did not appear to be recorded in the 1911 Census, William was listed in the 1912 Kelly’s Directory as a Shop-keeper at Bedmond.

Herbert was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in December 1915, serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA). He was recorded serving with the RGA throughout the War, and was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919. In both records he was listed as serving as a Gunner with the Anti-Aircraft Defence Command, based at Harwich. He gave his address at Bedmond.

Herbert Syer survived the War.
