Biography

John Ryall was born in 1883 at Brean Down, near Weston Super Mare in Somerset. In the 1911 Census it was shown that he had married and lived with his wife Ethel Letitia at 2 Myrtle Cottage, Cobham, Surrey, where John worked as a Stockman.

In 1913 the couple had their first child, Bob, who was baptised on 27th July. At this point the family had moved to 3 Gilbert Road, Belvedere, Kent, and John was still working as a Stockman. It is not known exactly why or when the family moved to Abbots Langley, however the Parish Magazine recorded that the couple had had a second son in the September 1915 edition.

John was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in August 1916, serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA). He was recorded in the Roll of Honour serving with the RGA each month throughout the rest of the War.

In the August 1916 edition of the Leavesden Parish Magazine it was noted that John Ryall had “joined HM Forces”, and had previously been employed as a Farm Labourer at the Leavesden Asylum.

He was also listed in the Absent Voter Records of Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919, serving with the 192nd Heavy Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery. His address was given at 13 Adrian Road, Abbots Langley.
