Biography

John Wallace junior was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in Spring 1919. He was initially identified from the Absent Voter Records and was not recorded elsewhere in the Abbots Langley Parish records. In the Absent Voter Records John was listed serving with “D” Co, Blyth, Northumberland and his address was given at Abbots Road, Abbots Langley.

The 1911 Census recorded that Henry John Wallace lived alone at “The Nursery”, Abbots Road, Abbots Langley. His occupation was Nurseyman, and he was 57 years old. It has not been possible to establish if this person is the man in question or if he had a son who might qualify as “junior”.

It seems unlikely that a 57 year old person would be serving, however the Abbots Langley man that was recorded in the Spring 1919 Absent Voter Record was shown serving with “D” Company, Blyth, Northumberland. This may have referred to the Blyth Battery, a coastal defence covering the port of Blyth, Northumberland. Maybe, as an older serviceman, John could have been assigned to a Home based gunnery unit. Or maybe this is a completely incorrect assumption, which is highly likely as the Abbots Langley man was referred to as “junior” – more likely to be the son of the 57 year old.

John Wallace junior survived the War.
