Biography

Arthur White was born in 1893 at Kings Langley. He was one of two children born to Harry and Kate White. At the time of the 1901 Census the family lived at Railway Terrace, Abbots Langley. Harry was employed as an Engine Driver at a Paper Mill – presumably John Dickinson Ltd.

Arthur was recorded for the first time in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in October 1914, serving with Kitchener’s Army. In December 1914 it was noted that he had joined the 1st Battalion of the Hertfordshire Regiment. He was not listed from February 1915, but in the November Parish Magazine of that year it was recorded that he had been wounded. This news was also reported in the Hertfordshire Advertiser of 6th November 1915, where he was referred to as a “Kings Langley man”. He re-appeared in the Abbots Langley Roll of Honour List in December 1915, this time serving with the Bedfordshire Regiment. By January 1917 Arthur had transferred back to the 1st Hertfordshire’s and remained with that battalion through to the end of the War.

Arthur was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley for Autumn 1918, Spring 1919 and Autumn 1919. In the Autumn 1918 Record he was listed serving with the 1st Hertfordshire’s, however for the other two records his unit was shown as the 3rd Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment. On all three occasions his address was given at Well Farm, Abbots Langley.

Arthur was also listed in the Kings Langley Parish Roll of Honour. He had been born at Kings Langley, and in 1914 was a member of the Kings Langley Football Club. Living at Railway Terrace meant that he was in close proximity of the centre of Kings Langley. However he was listed throughout the War in the Abbots Langley records, and at the end of the War was included in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley.

Arthur White survived the War.
