Biography

Humphrey Terry was born in the winter of 1885 at Abbots Langley. He was one of six children (four boys and two girls) in the family of John Terry and Jane Lunnon. His brother, John (junior) also served in the Great War. Jane was John’s second wife, and the couple married in September 1882. Jane had a son and a daughter from her previous marriage, and including John, the couple had another four children. In the 1891 and 1901 Census the family was recorded living at Breakspear Road, Abbots Langley. John worked as a Hurdle Maker and Humphrey was employed as an Apprentice. In the 1911 Census the family was recorded living at 68 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley, however Humphrey was not living at the family home at that point.

Humphrey was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in June 1917, serving with the Royal Engineers. At some point later in 1917 Humphrey was transferred to the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, and he was listed with this unit in the Parish Roll of Honour in January 1918. In the final Roll of Honour, in December 1918, he was identified serving with the 12th Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters, and continued serving with this unit in the immediate post-war period. Humphrey was listed with the 12th Sherwood Foresters in the Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 Absent Voter Records, and gave his address at 68 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley.

Humphrey Terry survived the War, as did his brother John. His cousins Harold and Ernest Terry and Daniel Wilson all survived the War and Harold and Ernest were commemorated in the Leavesden Roll of Honour.
