Biography

John Weston was born in 1899 at Abbots Langley. He was the eldest of five children (four sons and one daughter) born to John (senior) and Ellen Weston. In the 1901 and 1911 Census the family was recorded living at Bedmond where John (senior) worked as a Market Gardener.

John (junior) was recorded for the first time in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in September 1915 serving with the Middlesex Regiment. In December 1915 the Roll of Honour noted that he had been posted to the 6th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment.

At some point in 1917 John was transferred to the 24th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, and was listed with this unit in the January 1918 Roll of Honour. The Parish Magazine continued to record John with this unit until the end of the War.

John was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley for Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 serving with the 24th Royal Fusiliers. He gave his address at Bedmond.

It is not known if John Weston was related to Harry and Percy Weston, who were born and brought up at Watford. After the War Harry gave his address at Bedmond, and in 1911 Census Percy’s occupation was given as a Florist – which might have linked him to John Weston (senior) who worked as a Market Gardener.

John Weston survived the War.
