Biography

Frank Dowse was first listed in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in December 1918, serving with the Royal Fusiliers. It was most likely that he had joined up with this unit much earlier in 1918.

Frank was born in the autumn of 1899 at Abbots Langley to Arthur and Lillie Dowse. In the 1911 Census the family lived at 14 Marlin Square, where Arthur worked as a Decorator. The family had moved a short distance from 2 Temple Villas, where they lived at the time of the 1901 Census. Frank had two brothers, Leslie and Stanley, and Frederick Ginger, an Attendant at the Asylum also lodged with the family in 1911.

Frank survived the War, as did his brother Leslie, who was first mentioned as serving with the Herts Yeomanry from November 1915, and was listed with the this unit in the Autumn 1918, Spring 1919, and Autumn 1919 Absent Voter Lists. Leslie also survived the War. Frank was distantly related to many other members of the Dowse family from this area.
