Biography

John Hollier Gomme was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in July 1918, and was recorded each month through to the end of the War. However the Roll of Honour did not record a Military Unit.

The Military Service Acts of 1916 introduced conscription in the UK for men between the ages of 18 and 41, and John would have just been too old to be conscripted. However in April 1918 the upper and lower age limits were amended to cover men between the ages of 17 and 51. At this point John, who was 44 years old in 1918, became eligible to be called up for Service.

John Gomme was born in the Summer of 1874 at Abbots Langley. The 1901 Census recorded that Abel and Elizabeth Gomme lived at Adrian Road, Abbots Langley, with John and Abel’s grand-son Edwin Gomme. Abel worked as a Carpenter, as did John.

By 1911 John had married and moved to 42 Marlin Square. A daughter, Mabel, Anne, was born in 1902.

John Gomme survived the War, as did his cousin Edwin.
