Biography

Sidney Haynes was born on 10th March 1892 at Abbots Langley. He was one of five children born to Biscoe and Elizabeth Haynes. His older brother, Walter, also served in the Great War. In 1891 Biscoe worked at the Leavesden Asylum as an Attendant, and the family lived in Breakspeare Road. By 1901 the family had moved to 40 Adrian Road, and Biscoe had retired. The family remained at this address and in the 1911 Census Sidney was recorded working as a Labourer, an employed at a Paper Mill.

Sidney’s Service Record recorded that he attested on 3rd August 1915, and joined the Royal Artillery the next day at Woolwich. He gave his occupation as a Mill Hand and his address as 40 Adrian Road, Abbots Langley, and his next of kin as his mother, Elizabeth Haynes. His father had died in September 1913.

On 12th September 1915 he was posted as a Gunner. The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine roll of Honour first recorded him serving with the London Royal Field Artillery (RFA) in September 1915.

On 24th November 1915 Sidney was discharged “not likely to become an effective soldier”.No further details were included in his Service Record. From December 1915 he was not recorded in the Abbots Langley Roll of Honour.
