Biography

John was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in August 1916, serving with the Royal Navy. He was recorded serving with the Royal Navy each month through to the end of the War, and appeared in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley for Autumn 1918, Spring 1919 and Autumn 1919. In these records he was listed serving as an Officer’s Steward aboard HMS “Roberts”, and his address was given at Bedmond. HMS “Roberts” was an Abercrombie Class Monitor, which after service at Gallipoli and in the Eastern Mediterranean, earlier in the War, spent the latter part of the conflict as a Guard Ship at Yarmouth.

No other records have been identified for this man, however it is likely that Robert Stevens who also served, was his brother. Robert gave his home address at “Notley Croft”, Bedmond in the Absent Voter Records. John also returned to Bedmond

John Stevens survived the War.
