Biography

Herbert Cruttenden was born in the autumn of 1887 at Leavesden, the only son of James and Sarah Cruttenden. In the 1901 Census the family lived at Adrian Road, Abbots Langley, where James gave his occupation as a “Retired Asylum Attendant”. By the time of the 1911 Census the family had moved to 127 Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley. James was employed as a Packer of Photographic Goods.

Herbert married Elizabeth Baulch on 9th July 1907, in Chelsea, and was not listed at Abbots Langley in the 1911 Census. He was first listed in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in July 1916, serving with the Motor Transport Section of the Army Service (MTASC). It is presumed that his parents provided this information being residents of Abbots Langley, and continued to provide updates for the Roll of Honour throughout the remainder of the War.

Herbert’s Medal Roll indicated that he disembarked in France on 20th September 1915, and was demobilised on 6th March 1919

Herbert Cruttenden survived the War.
