Biography

The following text was transcribed from the The Edmundian (1814-1819) – The contemporary magazine of St Edmund’s College:

Guy Joseph Basil Bishop entered St. Hugh's Preparatory School as a small boy in the year 1901, and was there for rather more than a year. In 1904 he came to St. Edmund's as a Church Student; but in 1908, as the result of a very serious illness, he was forced to abandon all thought of the Priesthood. When, after a time, he had sufficiently recovered his strength, he devoted himself to the study of Law, with the view of qualifying as a solicitor. On the outbreak of war, he volunteered for service with The Royal Army Medical Corps. But his shattered health could not stand the extra strain, and he soon broke down completely. After several months of severe suffering, patiently borne, he died at Bournemouth, fortified with all the rites of Holy Church on November 6th, at the age of 26 years. On November 10th the College Community Mass was offered for the repose of his soul. The sympathy of all is extended to his family, especially to his widowed mother, for he was her only son.
