Address given as Batchwood St Albans. Robert was the third son of J Ramsay Drake, of Batch Wood near St Albans and born 3oth April 1892.


He was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was gazetted as 2nd Lieutenant in the 1oth Huzzars on 4th September 1912.
