Arthur William Day was born in St Albans, Hertfordshire  in 1882 to Frederick Samuel (B 1860 in St Albans) and Ellen (nee Atkins) (B 1869 in St Albans)


1891 Census records Arthur aged 9 living with his parents, sister Ellen 11, brothers Ernest 7 and Edward 5 in Wellclose Street, St Albans.


1901 he is still living with his parents at 17 Wellclose Street, with brothers Edward 15, Frederick 5 and sister Victoria 3. Arthur is working as a house painter as is his father.


Arthur marries Annie Maud Bushell on 23 Jul 1901 in St Albans. they have one son, Stanley Arthur born 13 May 1911 in St Albans


In 1911 Arthur and Annie are living at 56 Cannon Street St Albans, he is still a house painter.

Wartime Service

Giving his home address as 46 Kings Road, St Albans, Arthur attested on 29 Nov 1915 at Watford, mobilised 5 Jun 1916 and posted to the 2nd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment with the service number 25601. Arthur arrived in France 29 Sep 1916 and returned home 16 Mar 1917, having received a gun shot wound to the right knee, that was noted as severe, on 4 Mar 1917. Discharged on 10 Nov 1917 as permanently unfit. Granted a pension of 27s 6d for 4weeks, then dropping to 8s 3d, pension to be reviewed after 48 weeks.


Arthur dies on 14 Mar 1922 of pulmonary tuberculosis at 46 Kings Road, St Albans.
