His parents are currently unknown.

Horace was born 12 May 1891 in Watford, and resided in Watford.

On the 1901 Census, aged 9 he lived in Watford, with his grandmother Rose ATKINS.  On the 1911 Census, an Able Seaman aged 19, he was aboard H.M.S. Hogue stationed in Margate, Kent.

Wartime Service

He enlisted 12 May 1909 for a period of 12 years: a grocer’s porter, 5’7½” tall.  He joined H.M.S. Natal 17 September 1912 and was lost when Natal was sunk by an internal explosion near Cromarty.  His aunt, Mrs Rose A STONE of Watford, and his mother Mrs W LAYTON of Maida Vale, London W, were both notified of his death.  He was entitled to the Victory, British War and Star medals.
