Pre War

Son of John and Elizabeth (nee BALDWIN) AYRES of Watford; husband of Mary (nee ATTWOOD) AYRES of Watford.

His parents married 1881 in the Watford district.  Elizabeth died 1935 in Watford aged 73, and was buried 10 May in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; John possibly remarried 1940 in the Watford district to Vera GAZULAY, he died 1952 in Watford aged 90, and was buried 24 April, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

Charles was born 1882 in Rickmansworth, Herts, and baptised 10 December 1882 at St Mary’s, Rickmansworth.  He married 1911 in the Watford district.

On the 1891 Census, [William] aged 8 lived in Rickmansworth, with his parents and two siblings.  On the 1901 Census and 1911 Census, he is proving elusive.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in London; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 1 June 1915; and was killed in action.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Charles’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing. There is a Death announcement for Charles in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 6 November 1915.
