Son of Annie/Hannah (nee CHALLINOR) and the late Joseph BIGNALL of Crewe.
His parents married 15 June 1884 at St Paul’s, Crewe. Joseph died 1908 in the Nantwich, Chesh, district aged 62.
Clifford was born 1894 in Crewe.
On the 1901 Census, aged 6 he lived in Monks Coppenhall, Chesh, with his parents and four siblings. On the 1911 Census, a packer aged 16 he lived in Crewe, in the household of his brother.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Crewe, Chesh, 14 August 1914 in the Army Reserve: aged 20, 5’6″ tall, C of E. Suffered from frost bite 12 February 1915 and went to France 1 May 1915; was wounded at Ypres 8 May 1915; suffered gas poisoning 27 May 1915, and was in England from 29 May to 22 June 1915. He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 2 January 1915, and was killed in action.
