Pre War

Son of Arthur Joseph and Charlotte (nee TARBOX) GLENISTER of Watford.

His parents married 23 January 1886 at St Mary’s, Watford.  Charlotte died 1941 in Watford aged 74, and was buried 30 May in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Arthur died 6 January 1946 in Watford aged 78, and was buried 10 January, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

Alfred was born 30 June 1895 in Watford, and baptised 11 September 1895 at St Mary’s, Watford.  He resided in Watford.

On the 1901 Census, aged 6 he lived in Watford, with his parents and four siblings.  On the 1911 Census, an errand boy aged 15, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford, and was formerly Private 1921 Hertfordshire Regiment.

He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 21 January 1915, and was presumed killed in action.

Additional Information

There are brief articles about Alfred in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 11 May 1918 and 15 June 1918.

Unfortunately, Alfred’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
