Pre War

Son of James and Alice (nee KEEN) GURNEY of Watford.

His parents married 3 August 1879 at St Andrew’s, Watford.  James died 1924 in Watford aged 76, and was buried 26 January in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Alice died 1948 in Watford aged 87, and was buried 3 February, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

Charles was born 1895 in Watford, and resided in Watford.

On the 1901 Census, aged 5 he lived in Watford, with his father and five siblings.  On the 1911 Census, unemployed aged 16, he still lived in Watford, with his father and three siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford, and was formerly Private 4889 Hertfordshire Regiment.  

He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was presumed killed in action in the Battle of St Julien.  

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Charles’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing. Service number 266579 or possibly 266570.
